Plant Science teaching first for Askham Bryan College

A member of the horticulture teaching staff  has had a teaching resource published by the Science and Plants for Schools (SAPS) organisation.

Sarah Owen-Hughes (pictured above) was the first ever FE/HE College Lecturer to be invited to attend the prestigious Gatsby Plant Science Summer school this summer, along with 7 secondary school biology teachers, and 100 undergraduates. She has worked with FERA (Food & Environment Research Agency) at Sand Hutton, York over the summer to develop a 'CSI Plant' teaching resource to raise awareness of invasive plant pathogens across a broad range of subjects and levels, which is free for teachers all over the UK to download & use.

The GreenHouse Shop

We are lucky enough to have our very own mini-garden centre on site. The GreenHouse Shop (located in the glasshouses on the Horticuture department) is open every week day 9pm - 4pm.

We sell a wide variety of indoor and outdoor plants, gifts, flowers and supplies. We also have a large plant nursery with all sorts of shrubs and climbers. Our stock reflects the changing seasons so look out for Winter bedding and hanging baskets at the moment and Christmas trees, wreaths and planters coming soon.

With the help of our Floristy students we have recently completed a rennovation of the shop and it's now a lovely bright and airy place. Glasshouse Technician Aaron Hickman constructed the fantastic dresser and dressing table for displaying items.

whilst the students, Janet Newton-Storey (Glasshouse Technician) and Kate Pepper (Floristry tutor) got busy with the paint brushes turning old, worn out units into new display pieces for plants.

Our prices are VERY reasonable and our highly experienced technicians Aaron and Janet are on hand to offer any advice and guidance needed.
Please feel free to visit us in the shop anytime Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm. The shop is also open to the public so please spread the word to friends and family.

You can order bouquets through us and we can even cater for wedding and funeral flowers. Contact Tamsin Hullah (308) or Kate Pepper 307) for further details or e-mail tamsin.hullah@askham-bryan.co.uk

We look forward to seeing you soon!
